Winter Essentials for Your Newborn

Winter brings its own set of challenges for parents of newborns. Keeping your little one warm without overheating them is a delicate balance. Here's our guide to the essential items you'll need to navigate the colder months safely and comfortably.

1. The Art of Layering

Layering is the most effective way to regulate your baby's temperature. Start with a soft, breathable base layer (like an organic cotton bodysuit), add a middle layer for warmth (like a fleece or wool sweater), and finish with an outer layer if you're heading outside.

2. A Quality Sleep Sack

Loose blankets are a safety hazard in the crib. A winter-weight sleep sack (look for a higher TOG rating) provides warmth while keeping your baby safe. It also prevents them from kicking off their covers and getting cold during the night.

3. Protect the Extremities

Babies lose a lot of heat through their heads, so a soft, well-fitting hat is essential for outings. Don't forget warm booties and mittens, too. Look for items that stay on securely but aren't too tight.

4. Skin Protection

Cold air and indoor heating can quickly dry out a baby's sensitive skin. Use a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer or barrier cream to protect their cheeks and hands from chapping. A humidifier in the nursery can also help keep the air from becoming too dry.
